Steven Soderbergh is back after a four-year respite with his new film Logan Lucky, a quirky crime caper a la the director’s Ocean’s franchise.
This time, the heist centers around the world of NASCAR and the efforts of a gang of misfits (played by Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig) to rob a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The movie’s hilarious new trailer follows dim-witted country brothers Clyde (Driver) and Jimmy (Tatum) as they hatch a plan to steal boatloads of cash during the Coca-Cola 600, the biggest and most lucrative event of the NASCAR season.
Only, the two are a little too intellectually-challenged to pull off such an elaborate heist all by themselves, so they enlist the help of Joe Bang (Craig), a heavily tattooed redneck convict (it’s quite funny to see Craig in a role that’s the polar opposite of a silky smooth James Bond) with some actual smarts that they break out of prison for the robbery.
The flick also stars Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Hilary Swank and Katie Holmes as another band of wonderfully zany criminals.
Soderbergh talked to Entertainment Weekly about the similarities between Logan Lucky and his Ocean’s movies, which he called different but the same.
“Nobody has nice stuff. They have no money. They have no technology . . . that’s what I thought was fun about it,” he said. “It seemed familiar to me, but different enough. The landscape, the characters, and the canvass were the complete opposite of an Ocean’s film.”
Logan Lucky is set to be released on August 18.
