If you were to ask 100 people what their favorite Rocky movie is, you probably wouldn’t get one clear-cut winner. But it’s a safe bet that a whole chunk would pick Rocky IV to be the pinnacle of the Rocky franchise. Why’s that? Because the Russian villain Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, set up one of the most epic showdowns in sports movie history, if not movie history in general.
Most of us thought we’d seen the last of Drago after his defeat at the end of Rocky IV, but in an Instagram post hyping Creed 2 — the second movie in the Rocky spin-off franchise featuring Apollo Creed’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) — Sylvester Stallone teased us with a revenge match for the ages.
This may just be some…sly promoting (see what we did there?), but Drago did kill Adonis’ dad, so the stakes really couldn’t be higher in terms of movie conflict. Though to be fair, if we’re going by Dolph’s age, Drago would be pushing 60, so maybe it wouldn’t be the most compelling of fights. Maybe Drago has a son who would be down to spar?
Production of the film is still up in the air, considering director Ryan Coogler is interesting in filming the sequel, but is currently wrapped up in the production of the Marvel movie Black Panther.
So, it may be a little while until we see the grudge match to end all grudge matches. Until then, let’s watch Rocky kick some Soviet ass.
