On the heels of an awful matador death, one is talking about the time his eye popped out of his head YouTube/HBO

Warning: This is graphic stuff.

It takes a “different” kind of human being to willfully get back into the ring with a raging bull after being gored more than 30 times, but this is the story of Juan José Padilla.

HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is set to explore the wild and dangerous world of the bull and the matador tonight.

The episode is pretty timely considering the recent death of Ivan Fandino, who tripped over his cape and was gored to death. His last words were “Hurry up, I’m dying.”

Juan José Padilla is nicknamed the pirate because he was gored through the skull by a bull, knocking his eyeball out of his eye and onto the dirt.

That happened in 2011 and he says he’s been gored a whopping 38 times and yet he continues to go back for more. Nine of the gorings were near-death experiences, according to Padilla.

In the preview video above, Padilla says “the impact [of the bull’s horn] was like a hand grenade exploding in my face.”

You really have to wonder what possesses a person to do this, but we suppose we’ll find out at 10 p.m. EST.
